St. Patricks day is celebrated all over the world. Its all about the green while here in Holland we colour our self in orange to celebrate Kingsday, the greatest national holiday.
Some differences. St. Patrick himself is dead and holy, our King Willem Alexander is... not. Irish heritage and culture is celebrated. Here we celebrate the Kings birthday. While pints of Guinness are consumed. Here any booze will do.
On Kingsday everything happens on the street from selling your old shit till, grabbing a beer & snack while partying until morning. On St. Patty i'm not sure if drinking on the streets is ok but also it’s celebrated with parades and festivals.
You see both national holidays comes from a different perspective but they have one thing in common; its one big party.
When I was in DC with friends we had a drink a the beer garden en taco’s afterwards. Fine with me cause I was still hanging in a jetlag. Every year most Dutch people head to Amsterdam but almost in every town there is something going on from flea markets till concerts. Not to mention the dance festivals where great DJ’s spin their records. I think planning a trip to a country during a national holiday is getting the most out of the journey. So save the date 27 April every year!
