It brings al sort of discoveries like promenades, ancient walls, locals stuff and more.....
The world is too big to visit the same place twice but lately I made a couple of exceptions. For instance
Lake Garda, the biggest lake of Italy, located in the Northeast of Italy. You might understand it if I say this lake is surrounded by green hills, vineyards, lemon-, and olive trees. That it brings al sort of discoveries like promenades, ancient walls, locals stuff and more. Sounds good right? Even though it is popular among tourists it is touristy in a different way. Now its your turn to fall in love with this beautiful lake. Found out here why you need to visit Lake Garda in Italy.
1. Small towns
Let me start with the small towns. Lake Garda is about 50 km long and covers an area of 158 km. This area is covered with more than 20 charming towns. From the popular Sirmione till some off the beaten path ones (more later). Each has their own characteristics and are idyllic, charming and picturesque where you absolutely can chill and relax.
2. The Weather
Ofcourse I have mention this one. It is lovely and Mediterranean. Lots of sunshine and nice breezes. Be aware it can be hot in July and Augustus. Still this is good a reason to visit Garda. I went mostly off season which is perfectly fine.
I love castles and always looking for one to visit if I go abroad. The area of Lake Garda has some nice ones. You can discover one while driving around the lake or when stopping over in a small town. Think of the castle of Sirmione which you will not miss before entering the historical center of Sirmione. Castello Scaligero is a rare example of medieval port fortification. Or the castle in the small town of Moniga.
4. Wines & winetasting
Bardolino is famous for its wine and many city guides will guide you there. Instead go for the more local ones. I went to Monte Cigogna in Moniga. A local winery from 1921 where you can get a tour and taste good quality wines.
5. Hiking, cycling being outdoor
Lake Garda can be hilly but a perfect place to be outdoor. You can hike, stroll around in a lake town or cycle. I was surprised seeing many cycling fans. There is even a bike hotel in Peschiera della Garda see http://www.gardabikehotel.com/.
Not surprisingly, activities on the water are also very populair. Lake Garda offers a paradise for water sport lovers like Windsurfing, kite surfing, fishing trips, sailing, water skiing and jet skiing. There are even diving schools if you feel like diving.
6. Isola del Garda
The island Isola del Garda (small island) in Lake Garda is a private property. It consists of many mysteries and stories. What do you find here? Beautiful gardens and an impressive villa where the family Cavazza lives and looks after the small island. However it is open to the public you can only visit the island guided by the family. It means you are not able to see everything and able to move freely. Still listening to the background stories and visiting this island makes it an unique experience. See: www.isoladelgarda.com
7. Cappuccino's cheap and good!
We love our cappuccino’s right? Why you need to go to Lake Garda for a cappucci ? As mentioned before Venice has a reputation of having over top prices coffees.Read about it here. In the small towns like Moniga you get one for €1.25-. The hightest you might pay in the bigger more touristy towns like Sirmione, Peschiera is perhaps €2-, and guess what? The coffees are goooood.
Milan can be easily visited on a day trip
Not far away you find Verona where you can find the world famous Verona Arena. Even Milan, Brescia and Venica is convenient located and can be easily visited on a day trip.
9. Food - Quality products
Final reason...Lake Garda is an ideal destination for lovers of good food and fine wines. Find here good quality extra vergine olive oil (D.O.P – a quality code), as mentioned before wines and also lemons, fresh fish and truffle. The cuisine of Lake Garda is therefore based on these regional products. Numerous good eateries and restaurants are found where you can taste all these nice delights. And.. already falled in love with Lake Garda?
